Orange-mobile-media-usageMobile Media Usage Increases in Europe According to Orange Research

A study on behalf of Orange reveals that 54% of mobile owners use mobile media in France, Spain and the UK.  This is up by 10% on the 2011 figure.  ‘Mobile media’ is defined as browsing the internet, using apps or consuming content of any kind but not work-related tasks.

82% of those questioned in the research preferred using the browser versus 61% for apps and a third of mobile users said they had used their mobile to check further into a purchase based on something seen on TV.

Owning a tablet has increased by 10% to 17% from 2011 to 2012 and the users are shopping on these devices.

62% have used them to pay, redeem or reserve over the last 6 months and 58% have paid for a product online!

All the results of this study reiterate the increase in the use of mobile media, shopping and mobile usage in general in Europe.

Mobile-Optimised Website? 60% of UK Top Brands Don’t Have One!

Mobile-Optimised-WebsiteMobile-Optimised Website – 60% of UK Top Brands Don’t Have One!

In 2011, research was carried out among the top 100 UK advertisers and it was found that 79% did not have a mobile-optimised website.  The Internet Advertising Bureau made manual checks again in 2012 and the figure is better, dropping to 60%, showing that some of these large companies are beginning to do something about it.

In June 2012, studies found that over 14 million people in the UK are accessing the internet from their phone every day.  It’s well-known that many potential customers will not browse or purchase from a website (even their brand of choice) if it’s not working correctly on their mobile when they search.

I wonder what it will take to convince these top companies to catch up and include a mobile-optimised website in their marketing efforts!

The Importance of Mobile Websites – Ebay

Importance-of-Mobile-WebsitesThe importance of mobile websites is confirmed by the ongoing growth results from eBay, on 19th July 2012.

The President and CEO, John Donahoe, states “It’s very hard to underestimate the impact of the mobile revolution.  We made a very big bet on mobile 3 or 4 years ago and it’s really paying off and what’s happening is these devices are becoming the central control system of our lives……90 million people have now downloaded the eBay mobile app and we’ll do over $10 billion of volume on our mobile apps this year”.

He goes on to give the examples that women are buying handbags while having a coffee and guys working on their cars use their mobiles to order spare parts.

With regard to the mobile purchasing process he says “Our consumers are engaging with our product at home, at work, on the sidewalks, in stores – sometimes they buy it on their mobile device, sometimes they don’t…..we are seeing people across the board, demographically, using our mobile applications…….I think we’re going to see continued usage of the mobile device playing a critical role in how consumers shop and pay…….PayPal mobile payments now $10 billion is just evidence of increasingly people using their mobile phones to pay as well as to buy”.

He also talked about the facility soon to be introduced by PayPal which will involve the consumer being able to scan a personal identity document such as a driver’s licence plus one or all credit/debit cards using the camera on the smart phone, thus creating a PayPal digital account or wallet via mobile with all details held in the ‘cloud’ – a simple way to create a PayPal digital wallet and therefore allow people to make their payments wherever they are, through a mobile device.

With regard to trends in Europe, Mr Donahoe states “Even in the face of economic uncertainty in Europe, the mobile revolution and the bet we made on mobile is paying off.”

He sums up his views by saying that eBay’s growth is fuelled by the fact that its access is now ubiquitous, particularly because the use of a mobile device is 24/7.

I think you’ll agree that the upward trend of eBay’s sales is a strong indication of the importance of mobile websites to secure more of your market.

Mobile-Friendly Websites – It’s Not Too Late To Be Up-To-Date!

mobile-friendly website

Why do we need Mobile-Friendly Websites? The latest statistics are truly staggering. There are currently more than 5 Billion mobile phones in use worldwide, and about one billion of these are capable of connecting to the internet.

In fact, there are more internet-connected mobile devices than there are desktop and laptops combined.

Because the use of mobile devices is steadily rising, it’s important that every business considers building a mobile-friendly website. Those that don’t, risk losing business to those that do… it’s just that simple.  In fact Google themselves are encouraging all businesses to go mobile and offered a certain amount of free mobile-friendly websites in Alabama, USA in 2011 to kick-start the initiative.

While all businesses could benefit by having a mobile-friendly website, some business types will currently benefit more than others.  However, it is anticipated that by 2014 the use of mobile devices for searching will overtake desktop searches so all organizations should consider including a mobile version of their website. If your business offers any sort of mobile service, emergency services, or simply appeals to those “on-the-go,” you fit the category of needing to do something about it now!

It would be impossible for me to list the business types I think would benefit most, but I will give you some examples of those who should have mobile-friendly websites right now:

  • General Practitioner
  • Equipment Hire
  • Lawyers
  • Accountants
  • Dentists and Orthodontists
  • Florists
  • Hairdressers
  • Beauty Parlours
  • Taxis
  • Bars
  • Takeaways
  • Insurance Brokers
  • Jewellers
  • Removal Companies and many more…………….

As you can see, there are a lot of categories which fit the scenario where someone might often use a mobile device to look for a business. An added benefit is that most are looking to do business right away, not sometime in the future.

If mobile-friendly websites are easy to find, attractive, easy to navigate, optimized and offer essential business information immediately to the viewer, then the certain result will be new customers for those businesses!

Why not contact me and I’ll get back to you immediately about creating a mobile-friendly version of your website, within a few days and at a very competitive price.  Get in touch HERE!

Mobile Website – How Would You Like to Pay?

mobile-websiteInstead of remembering to take their cards and wallets with them, people are now just taking their mobile phones.  Why bother carrying anything else when they can now pay for goods through a mobile website?

Consumers are shopping with their phones, comparing goods/services from different vendors, finding the best deals and then completing the transaction – all through their mobile device.

In the UK, mobile phone operator Orange, introduced ‘Quick Tap’ through Barclaycard in May 2011, with Google Wallet and MasterCard hot on its heels.  The big event in 2012 is, of course, the Olympic Games in London and visitors will be able to pay for transport, shopping and other purchases using their mobile phones.

Even if a business doesn’t accept payments through the internet, it is still extremely important that they have a mobile website to at least attract customers to ‘Click to Call’, find the premises or order a product.  The opportunity will still exist to ask “How would you like to pay?”!

I can help you attract more paying customers!  Get in touch with me HERE and I’ll respond immediately to talk about creating you a mobile website – at a very competitive price!
